Well Woman Checkup
  • A well woman examination is an exam offered to women to review elements of their reproductive health. It is recommended once a year for most women. The exam includes a breast examination, a pelvic examination and a pap smear but may also include other procedures.
  • Women who experience irregular menstruation or periods - which may point to problems with ovulation (egg release) – are generally advised to consider evaluation and treatment earlier.
  • The well woman examination by a medical professional is recommended at least once a year to women over 18 years old and/or women who are sexually active.
  • Its importance lies in identifying potential early health problems.
  • The most important tests included in an examination is the breast exam, pelvic exam and the pap test, although some doctors consider other testsin the examination, including measurement of blood pressure, HIV testing, and other laboratory tests such as urinalysis, CBC (Complete blood count) and testing for other sexually transmitted diseases.
  • The procedure is important also to detect certain cancers, especially breast and cervical cancer.

  • Menopause is the cessation of a woman's reproductive ability. This typically occurs in women in midlife, during their late 40s or early 50s, and signals the end of the fertile phase of a woman's life.It is commonly defined by the state of the uterus and the absence of menstrual flow or "periods", but it can instead be more accurately defined as the permanent cessation of the primary functions of the ovaries. What ceases is the ripening and release of ova and the release of hormones that cause both the build-up of the uterine lining, and the subsequent shedding of the uterine lining (the menses or period).
  • The transition from a potentially reproductive to a non-reproductive state is normally not sudden or abrupt, occurs over a number of years, and is a consequence of biological aging. For some women, the accompanying signs and effects which can occur during the menopause transition years may significantly disrupt their daily activities and sense of well-being.
